The History of the Humble Olive

There's an interesting diary on "the history of the humble olive" over at Daily Kos, of all places, that was rather interesting. Be sure to check it out. Personally, I love olives and olive oil, and I can easily go through a bottle of olives while eating cottage cheese (another favorite food), using the olives as a garnish. Tasty! Here's a brief quotation from the diary:

The Olive was a native to Asia Minor and spread from Iran, Syria and Palestine to the rest of the Mediterranean basin around 6,000 years ago. It is among the oldest known cultivated trees in the world (being grown before the written language was invented). It was being grown on Crete by 3,000 BC and may have been the source of the wealth of the Minoan kingdom. The Phoenicians spread the olive to the Mediterranean shores of Africa and Southern Europe. Olives have been found in Egyptian tombs from 2000 years BC. The olive culture was spread to the early Greeks then Romans. As the Romans extended their domain they brought the olive with them (but not the olive branch! They were fond of conquering). A little known fact is this: 1400 years ago the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad, advised his followers to apply olive oil to their bodies, and himself used oil on his head.

I just noticed that you're gonna have a baby this year. Me too! We might have babies in the same month! Mabruk.

Salaam 'alaikum. Congratulations to you too; I had found out about your wife's pregnancy the other day when I visited your new blog. (To which I also say, welcome back!) Yeah, I think maybe our babies are going to be born fairly close to each other; our due date is August 4th, insha'allah. Yours? We just went to the doctor last night for the monthly check-up: everything's fine.

JD,
Thank you for commenting on my blog! It's nice to know that someone so far away is reading something that I wrote.

Since the Kingsmen Alumni Corps has done what they set out to do...I'm sure you could probably find someone in the corps that is willing to sell their uniform. I have no idea what you would spend for such an item but let me know and I'll see if anyone would sell you their uniform.

Once again, I appreciate the blog comment and I hope that you come back from time to time.

:) Tami

W'salam wr wb bro! Our baby's due on the 13th of August insha'Allah. I'm glad to hear that your baby's doing great. Is it gonna be a boy or a girl?

Abdul: We don't know yet! :) According to one doctor (who ran a thorough scan on the baby about a month ago), "most likely a girl." But there's been no definitive answer just yet, even in the last scan which was on Wednesday. Adding to the confusion, Milady had a dream about a week ago, where the baby was a boy. ;) So, some year we'll find out, insha'allah.

Insha'Allah bro. As long as the baby's healthy! Me and my wife had a couple of dreams telling us that we're gonna have a girl. And that's what the doctor said too! Insha'Allah you'll find out soon enough.
